I was sent this today from the Department of Business Innovation and Skills the UK department that focus on growth through skills and innovation.

This is about encouraging Business people to go into school and colleges to help our young people relate to the real world. If you already do this I would love to hear your stories in the comments below, also read on and register at the site offering your help.

It is a great intuitive and I am confident that many UK Ecademy members would be brilliant at this plus would like to get behind helping our young people

I am sure they would love great speaker from the rest of the world, or perhaps there are opportunities to start an initiative like this where you live, if not UK based

-start-

We know how important it is to engage young children early to enable them to make sensible and informed choices about potential careers. That is why BIS is supporting an initiative to recruit 100,000 volunteers who are willing to speak about their career in school as a means of inspiring young people about the opportunities in the workplace. Signing up couldn't be easier - http://www.inspiringthefuture.org/ .

Speakers for Schools

Speakers for Schools was launched the week of 10-14 October 2011 with a series of talks in state secondary schools around England. It is the idea of BBC Business Editor, Robert Peston, who wants young people in disadvantaged state schools and colleges to have the same opportunities to hear from inspirational speakers as those who attend top independent schools. The idea is to level the playing field and for it to become the norm for leaders in their fields to give talks in state schools and colleges. Speakers for Schools is administered by Education and Employers Taskforce charity. http://www.speakers4schools.com.

Speakers for Schools aims to have 1000 speakers who can address the big topical issues of the day: technological, scientific, political, economic, historical, cultural, artistic, ecological and ethical. Over 750 people have already agreed to participate including many leading CEOs, politicians, media and arts people, scientists, entrepreneurs and academics. Full list of speakers at: http://www.speakers4schools.com/speakers

The aim is to broaden the horizons and raise the aspirations of young people.

Inspiring the Future is a new free service run by the charity, Education and Employers Taskforce which aims to get 100,000 people from all sectors and professions volunteering to go into state schools and colleges to talk about their jobs, careers, and the education routes they took. Everyone from CEOs to apprentices can volunteer for Inspiring the Future. Recent graduates, school leavers and people in the early stages of their career can be inspirational to teenagers - being close in age they are easy to relate to; while senior staff have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share. Talking with young people in a school or college can make a real difference to their perceptions of what jobs are available, and it may inspire them to consider options that they had previously never thought about. Talking to working professionals can also help them get a realistic view on the different routes into jobs and careers, and the current labour market.

The intention is to get young people to produce short videos of people talking about their jobs and to upload these via their teacher to create a massive free on-line video library of thousands of people talking about thousands of jobs. The Taskforce will coordinate this project working with a range of partners. A regional and national schools competition is currently being planned.

-end-

Please do sign up or Tweet this so others can help

warm regards
Celebrating 14 years 1998-2012

Ok, cast yourself back to 1998. What were you doing 14 years ago?

Have you changed your business, spouse, business partner or country?

How much have you innovated and adapted to the new world that is remarkably different to 1998?

How many people in your network then still matter to you and you to them?

Today, Thomas and I celebrate Ecademy's 14th Birthday with you. On the 7th February 1998 we chatted through the needs of business owners and networkers within the context of the Internet market at that time and decided to create a community to serve their needs. To help them to innovate, advance their tech skills, find new business and find new collaborative opportunities. Critical to our vision was the desire to create a family feel and a real community. As you know the word LOVE is important to us. i9n 1998 we could feel that the 'entrepreneurs' and the sole trader was going to become critical to survival, clearly the Internet was going to create havoc and at the same time create new hope and opportunities.

Over these 14 years Ecademy's growth been so steady, no huge spikes, like a real family or community it has grown at people speed not 'investor speed'. The best thing is that people say to us "wow, you are still here' still providing a home for us all when we need it'.

There is no doubt in my mind that the journey of Ecademy has been an enormous challenge, we thought having 3 children would be hard work! But like our kids this has been the most amazing experience for us. A real family all over the world that has grown up together, shared problems, pains, joys, losses and gains.

Like our children, sometimes we (the collective we) don't hear from our members until they are hurting, that call or email or message that asks you advise and asks if you know anyone that can help them. At those moments the member is close to the community again, they re-energize, re-fuel and then go off again into the wilderness! Over 14 years we have seen many come, go and come back again.

Often I get asked 'is the Internet bringing people closer or isolating them more', my answer is 'that is up to you', it is up to you how you use the amazing connecting tools we have at our finger tips. My observation is that those who use is to engage and build business friendships may sometimes be alone, but they are never lonely. (just look at these Blogs that discuss 'loneliness -or not' on Ecademy).

Sometimes we take for granted the people right on our doorstep, help could be inside our family maybe in our close network and yet we seek new people and new thoughts. So often the solution, ideas and real unconditional love comes from those we could call, email, message or meet up with that have known us for years. The Internet creates for us all an opportunity to build the most phenomenal Social Capital, a type of capital that grows in momentum providing we feed, respect and value it, providing we truly connect and get to know, like and believe in one another.

This time of year always causes Thomas and I to reflect and this year we want to thank everyone for their loyalty and belief in Ecademy. Today we are celebrating lunch at a wonderful Private Business Club called Adam Street in London with many of them. 14 years is a long time, in a life cycle of a product we have been through many cycles. FaceBook is about to celebrate its 8th Birthday! How much change has happened even since then, yet we have been loving and sharing and supporting one another for 6 years before FaceBook (is that like 06BC or 06BF)

Thomas and I are heading toward our 50's now, with older children and different worries when we started we were babies of 33 with toddlers and babies ourselves, many of you have seen many of us grow, mature and learn, that is just so gorgeous, what a journey we have been on together. So many people have grown up with us, been our coach and mentors and allowed us to be theres.

Ecademy is very special, because of the people in it, this day belongs to the community and we love being part of it.

Happy Birthday Ecademy, your tenacity and care is what we all need in this world of change

Through Ecademy we just want to be your life-long friend, growing old together, sharing stories and knowledge on the Blogs and trusting each other with our dreams and fears. A constant place to call your 'Internet home', where 'everyone knows your name'!

Remember this?

Finally, if you can join us to celebrate more on the evening of the 25th February we would love to see you after the KPI Event I am speaking at to help you 'Become a Key Person of Influence', we will be back at Adam Street for drinks at 6pm.

with love

I have summarized below the incredible comments that many within the Ecademy Community supplied in a Blog over the last 48 hours. Within 48 hours of this Why do you think we have mass youth unemployment? Blog being published there were over 8,500 views and 210 comments - thank you

I have not captured the names of those I quote, I apologize in advance, this was quite an editing task. You and others will know who you are. I have also adjusted some of the sentences to bring opinions together. Some of the comments offer solutions, others provide their beliefs about the causes of this unemployment problem

Thank you for these insights 'Ecademy Community'

1.	We should provide a new form of National Service aimed toward contributing to communities and Social outcomes

2.	Youth of today don't know hat hard work and achievement is

3.	My children are achieving loads and like their friends they strive to achieve and do well, not all youths are the same

4.	Let's remember that 75% are employed

5.	If we don't believe in these youths the clever and ambitious ones will leave the country and go where they are appreciated and nurtured

6.	We need to prepare youths for a life of freelance and self employed work

7.	We are where we are because we values things rather than people

8.	Lack of investment from Industry, we should ensure employers run Training programs and work closer with our education system

9.	Business has stopped taking responsibility for their workers. Industrialists used to provide homes and education for their workers

10.	Aging population and lack of retirement aspirations means that jobs do not become available

11.	Low skilled jobs have been irradiated due to technology

12.	We are a materialistic society that values wealth above contribution and vocational life styles

13.	Further Education qualifications are meaningless unless you are going to University

14.	Pressure from parents who have misguided aspirations for their children, Apprenticeships were always a good option in the past

15.	VC's don't recognise the skills of the under 30'and don't invest I their NewCo's

16.	So much stimulation at home on PC's and access to free content and networks of friends means that kids no longer get bored if they are not working

17.	Voluntary work should be encouraged to give self esteem and experience

18.	Tenacity to find a job should be taught, Nigel Dunn said it took him 73 interviews to get off a Building site and into Hewlett Packard where he built his career

19.	Automation has removed low-skilled jobs (I personally boycott automated supermarket tills!)

20.	The celebrity culture of easy wealth, become famous to get rich'

21.	We are no longer manufacturing enough

22.	There are more women working

23.	The Tax system makes it too expensive to employ people

24.	The risk of employing and then needing to law the person off, too expensive is they are no longer needed, poor at their work or the business declines

25.	Lack of respect for authority and rules for the workplace

26.	Pupils are taught to pass exams not to get a job or be an entrepreneur

27.	Do we understand the skills of this 'lost generation?'

28.	Skills of teachers are lacking, they are not adapting to the low attention span of this 'connected and plugged in' generation. They prefer to multi-task.

29.	Lack of career advice at a young enough age before decisions are made for their future

30.	DIY culture and tools at our finger tips means we no longer need PA's, secretaries, low level marketing assistance

31.	Public Sector dominated the economy for too long

32.	High, unattainable living costs. Average Price of house has tripled from 1996-2006 while the median wage increase is only £6.5k

33.	Lack of cohesion and communication between educators and Business

34.	The young are full of inventiveness, excitement, wonder and creativity but businesses do not allow them the freedom to express and develop

35.	Companies think that University Graduates will give them more, not everyone is right for Uni

36.	Media needs to be more positive, they are talking them down and therefore the Youths have little to live up to

37.	Internships provide an excuse for employers not to pay

38.	Senior Unemployment has also risen by 13% while Youth has risen by 12%, there is a link as the chain of promotion has gone for a new-comer

39.	The lost generation is a global problem, not isolated to the UK

40.	People will become more self-employed, this is the shift

41.	Vicious cycle of needing experience to get job

42.	Businesses no longer feel they should train from the bottom up

warm regards

This is how our Youths feel

On Friday evening last week, I wrote a very short Blog called Why do you think we have mass youth unemployment?

This Blog was published at 6.54pm and by 7.54 it had over 80 comments and by the Sunday evening, 48 hours later it had over 200 comments and over 8,300 views.

I was/am staggered to see this reaction and also to read the comments from employers, entrepreneurs, one man bands and advisors here on Ecademy. The passion for this subject is quite unbelievable.

In summary, I read the 210 comments so far in detail and can sense a divide between those that blame the Youths and those that blame society, plus there are those that say this has happened before and it will happen again and we have to 'live with it'

It took me 90 minutes to digest the comments; they were so deep and very insightful

I have summarized them (in thios BLOG 42 views on Youth Unemployment by Small Business Owners ) as I feel many won't have time to read the whole comments threads.

What I want to share here is some insights from Youths and also to open up and tell you a little about what I have been up to.

Over the past 10 months I have been dedicated to looking at a large issue/opportunity regarding Digital and Social Media for Small Businesses. As you know it has been 14 years (on the 7th February) that Thomas and I started Ecademy and since then we have been evangelists, teachers, coaches and irritants to many about the importance of the online world of 'connecting'. We walk out talk, we are small business owners ourselves, with limited resources but have been able to build a Global Brand, Network/Community and Personal Reputation thanks to Ecademy Blogging, Twitter, and YouTube. Neither of us uses FaceBook or LinkedIn much so I cannot comment on them a great deal.

In March last year I launched a Manifesto for Digital Business Britain and this resulted in 5 months of research which culminated in my White paper called ' Exploiting the future Potential of Social Media within UK Small to Medium Enterprises'. (this can be downloaded here www.pennypower.co.uk )

The research I conducted was incredible for me to experience. The Manifesto opened doors to institutions, academia, Industry and Government and allowed me to take an objective look at the affect the new world was having on the economy. The greatest findings and the most critical part of this past 10 months was my time spent with Youths.

At 3am one morning I had a light bulb moment. Lying awake in bed, searching my mind for how to help struggling small businesses find the resources to truly leverage the opportunity this new world provides I saw the solution. Why don't we match Born Digital Youths with Business Owners?

I then spent several weeks looking at the skills provided inside the current Apprenticeship world, I believed that this was a perfect route to attract young people into a Training program and enable them to have work-based, employed training. I was very disappointed to find that there was not a course on the Apprenticeship Curriculum that met the needs and the skills that a modern business would utilize. I then met with the Apprenticeship Department and spent 2 months learning this world and with a grateful heart assembled an incredible team of experienced people to help me create a new Apprenticeship, called the Social Media Apprentice. We are now building the Digital Youth Academy which will launch next month with a Pilot of 20 Youths and will come to market through Colleges in the Spring.

Part of my learning enabled me to run some focus groups with Youths and this was the greatest eye opener for me. In fact the first time I presented my findings to a group of 100 business owners, I cried, just hearing their young voices and seeing their faces in my mind.

You see, some might call them lazy, uneducated, selfish, undisciplined, useless, to name a few of the words I have read again and again, but it is very interesting when you hear what they call us.

This is some of the feedback I noted in my focus groups and interviews

We are a problem to society

We are not wanted

We are not understood

We don't want charity

You are unconnected

Your communication pathways are different

You are slow and complicated

We can do things fast

We need you to believe in us

We need you to listen to us

This is my analysis of my time with them

They 'think' differently

They 'do' differently

They 'want' differently

They 'know' differently

They 'have grown up' differently

They 'get technology'

They are the Digital Generation

And they are hurting

I think the final moment for me was the closing discussion when I asked how they would feel if I brought to them a set of employers who would appreciate them for their new skills, new attitudes and would nurture and listen to them and the replies were

The relief would be enormous for us

We would feel empowered

Excited

Safe

Appreciated

Re-assured

Part of society

I have supplied the analysis of the comments from my Blog from the amazing Ecademy Members who cared enough to contribute HERE, they are incredible to read, I will embed them in the comments section beneath this when I publish this Blog, but I guess my closing question to you is -

Would you help a Youth? Can you give them a chance? Can you see how they could be an amazing asset to your business during these shifting times?

The Born Digital Generation is clearly incredibly good at knowing how to create friendships online. At varying degrees of intensity they share thoughts, good wishes, content and their daily lives online within their FaceBook Status Updates.

There is a huge movement toward encouraging Young Enterprise, I am on the Senior Advisory Board for NACUE (National Association of College and University Entrepreneurs), I am also a Resident Entrepreneur in the newly formed Gazelle Group to encourage Enterprise in Further Education Colleges and I am building an Education Company to support the development of Social Media Qualifications for Youths to help them gain work experience through Apprenticeships and Internships (The Digital Youth Academy to be launched early 2012). This morning I attended a 'Knowledge Economy' meeting for the Surrey Connects Team to discuss enterprise growth in Surrey through knowledge sharing, Youths again where a key component of our discussion.

There is no doubt in my mind that Young people will use their social networks to spread their message and build advocates, teams and customers around them.

I am also interested however in their ability to network offline, a critical skills that takes adults years to master and often many still haven't. The disastrous experience of someone selling to me at networking events still prevails and I have yet to find a polite way to ensure that they learn not to do this.

Networking for a 16-18 year old in a room of adults and peers would strike me as being terrifying for most young people, yet, they need to learn this skill early on. Looking someone in the eye, shaking their hand and learning to ask questions and listen for links and thoughts to maintain the conversation is an art.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Do you think we should teach Networking to Youths? What words of wisdom would you pass on?

A couple of months ago a wonderful lady walked into my life, full of zest, power, warmth, excitement and drive, her name is Paula MacArthur., some of you will have seen her great Blogs here.

Paula, like many amazing pieces of serendipity, came into my life when I was seeking a solution to a problem and didn't' know how to solve it.

The problem was my desire to Coach and Mentor people, but the lack of time to really do it effectively.

This Blog has three messages within

1. Serendipity
2. The power of mentoring
3. The need for friendship

Firstly Serendipity

Many of you will have read or heard me speak about the fact that Social Networking and Social Media speeds up serendipity.- the 'coincidences in our lives that happen'. This year I have experienced the most unbelievable amount of this type of 'energy'. The work I have put into people and networks over the last 13 years seems to be creating a world for me now that creates the right person in front of me at exactly the moment I need them. Often I don't know who I need or what I need, I only know my 'challenge' and then 'like magic' the solution is presented to me by a random person at a random moment.
This is happening at least 5 times a week at the moment, the instances of it are incredible, and then when I repeat them to Thomas at the end of the day he just says' Penny, that is networking, but critically, it is networking with an Open Mind, with Random people and topics in a supportive manner - ORS!

Paula was a random meeting, she is certainly an open and random person and her goals are one of 'supporting others'. I had no idea when I agreed to meet her why I was doing it, yet, she had a solution for me.

This is a message of trust and belief I guess, getting out and having conversations is ALWAYS worth while, it just might take to join the dots and realize why.

Secondly, Mentoring

This year I have become fascinated by Mentoring, all around me I hear people talk about it. The Government are creating a pool of 40,000 Mentors for Businesses on this website www.mentorsme.co.uk with the British Banking Association and I have had countless meetings with different mentoring Organisations to see the quality and thoughts of the mentors. I decided that I wanted to Mentor some start-ups and help them to get on their way. Little did I know the commitment to time and the vast and diverse needs of the individuals that needed it. Managing my diary and email has been a full-time job and in the end the level of rejection from me to others has been soul destroying to say the least, the demand is huge now, my heart is big enough but my quantity of time I can give it does not match the desire or the need.

So, back to Paula, on a day that I was feeling very sad about my pulling back from Mentoring and deciding who I could recommend instead of me, I met Paula in 9 Adam Street, my favorite place for meetings in London, Paula offered me a solution that I liked. She offered me her MasterMind Agency and explained how she could manage the administration and workload of me helping 10 ladies in 2012,, and therefore help 10 companies grow and be sustainable. I can now know that I am giving time and supporting people in an efficient and powerful way.

The message here is that others often have the solutions, they see life differently and by Paula bringing a solution to me, I can achieve my own personal goals of supporting others

Finally, the need for Friendship

In my interviews with potential ladies who want to join my MasterMind Group I am running I ask what their objectives are for 2012 and how they would measure whether I have helped them. So far all the ladies I have spoken to are very successful in their own sectors, creative, driven, bright and far more knowledgeable on some things than I am. While I can help them see things differently, innovate and help them grow their Social Capital and thought-leadership skills, they have so much to bring to the Group that we will all benefit from. So I have drilled down and down to discover the real dream for them in 2012 and why they are interested in the Group and the answer has unanimously been 'friendship'. Real businesses friends who have one another's goals, dream and interests as their driver for the group. To go on a journey throughout the year with 'friends'.

The phrase 'Alone together' springs to mind and this is my final message. In 2012 perhaps each of us would benefit from some real friendship rather than just casual online conversations and musings. If I could get to the end of 2012 knowing that I have deeply helped 10 people, with unconditional love and intention and at the end of that year they have fulfilled their dreams of 'friendship' that perhaps gave them more confidence and courage to build their businesses and personal brands, then that will be a good year.

So, thank you Paula, I guess this Blog is dedicated to you, my new friend who has helped me to see a new way forward and in doing this, will help me to help 10 ladies to achieve their dream of 'friendship'.

I am attending the launch of a book by a very great man called David Jones on the 1st December, in my exciement for this book I was able to get hold of an early copy thanks to Nick Giles at Seven Hills PR http://www.wearesevenhills.com/.

I am really enjoying the read as David talks very passionately about the types of companies that will survive and thrive in the new economy of engagement and really caring.

Today, businesses are under the spotlight more than ever before by all thier stakeholders. David Jones argues that business leaders must re-evaluate their role in society or face unprecedented criticism.

In Who Cares Wins: Why good business is better business, Jones writes that only the businesses that behave responsibly will survive the 'Age of Damage' and cites social media as the driver for the biggest transformation to business in a generation.

As a strong advocate for social media, I am in total agreement with David Jones on this. Never before have consumers had such power to create change.

David Jones argues that it is no longer a question of whether or not a company buys into the idea of doing good to do well. The digital revolution has ensured that businesses can't opt out because those that fall foul of their customers will suffer swift punishment.

The timing of his book could not be more appropriate, as the world hovers on the brink of another recession, the Eurozone sits in crisis and the level of youth unemployment is rising at an alarming rate, companies have to start thinking differently, as Thomas Power says, we have to be Network Thinkers, not Institutional Thinkers.

It's nice to see a global business leader talking sense and David really is a Global leader with a lot of influence. You can read more about him HERE

This is one of those books that makes you think and provides tangible advice to ensure companies are not caught out in this era of 'radical transparency'.

If you want to read this book. Amazon will be shipping this week I believe - would be good to get your thoughts

If Jeremy added a #tag like #sellingaBiz then anyone could search the series of Blogs on Ecademy or even follow the #sellingabiz conversation on twitter

To demonstrate this, I have been using #DBBM around the subject of my Digital Business Britain Manifesto, if you look at this SEARCH you will see all the Blogs that I have written in this area of interest. Clustering like this can help people go on a journey with you

Also you can check the conversation on Twitter under that #tag and when the Blog is RT'd here, not only do you take your @twitter name but also the conversation you are leading

Try it out! It works!

This morning I woke to the news of the Youth Contract that the Government have created to pledge £1bn to help the 1.1 million youths that are currently unemployed and not in education or training (NEETs) to get noticed, trained and employed

More details here on BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-15878796

Also follow the #youthcontract conversation on twitter

Up to 400,000 work placements will be created

One of the way they wish to assist is through Apprenticeships.... As a potential employer you could hire an Apprentice that would be trained by a training agency or college while working for you. The hourly minimum wage for this young person would be £2.60 (you are allowed to pay them more!)

The Government will launch a further incentive to you which is to award you with £1500 for taking on a Young Person, They mention that the overall payment to you could be over £2200. I heard £1500 on the news this morning which seemed to be for you to have at your discretion

What do you think you would use the £1500 for?
